I have to give credit to my son for the clever backyard theme we designed using nautical lighting. Maybe it is all the pirates movies or something, but my son desperately wanted us to make our big deck feel like a ship in the ocean. At first we laughed it off as the whims of a child’s imagination, but then we got to thinking about nautical lights and how we might implement them around the backyard. Now our deck feels like a great big ship and the yard below an ocean with bobbing lights.
We started with simple boat lanterns for the deck itself. We places small boat lanterns upon each post. Then we put a great big mast light right above where we put the light. This makes the deck feel like a boat, with a great big mast light above… too bad there aren’t any sails.
Then beneath the deck, we used ship engine lights. These robust lights provide subtle but functional light for when we need to dig around for something down there (like the garden hose). Then out in the yard along our pathways, we put anchor lights. And around the perimeter we used bollard lights to demarcate our yard without needing a fence.
Now we have unified lighting theme all based around nautical lighting. And the yard looks more lovely while being more safe as well.
