It’s a famous chinese proverb that says- “Better light a candle than to curse the darkness”. The modern version of this proverb should be, “better light the LED than to curse the darkness”. LED as we all know is a ‘light emitting diode’ and the lamp or bulb that uses these light emitting diodes are known as LED lamps/lights. LED is a semiconductor diode that emits light with usage of direct current(DC) and this was first discovered by Henry Round at Marconi Labs in the 1920′s. Initially, they were quite expensive and were used in laboratory and electronic devices only. Then they were used in appliances such as TV, radio, telephones, calculators and watches as indicators. An LED individually may have a lesser output of light when compared to incandescent and fluorescent lamps. So, multiple diodes or high power light emitting diodes are used together in LED lights/lamps that can have a very high lumen output compared to other existing lamp types. A special characteristic of LED lights is that they emit light with small band of wavelengths, that produces strong coloured lights which make them very popular commercially. LED’s have been widely used to power indicator lights, traffic signals, billboards, emergency lights, automobile, railway and aviation lighting – as head lights, tail lights, brake lamps, turn signals, indicators etc. Most of our modern gadgets and domestic appliances use LED’s such as DVD players, LCD tv’s with LED backlighting also known as LED tv’s, cell phones with LED camera flash, infrared LED’s that are used in remote controls of all electronic devices and many more such uses. Compared to incandescent and fluorescent lights, LED lights consume lesser power/ energy, have a longer life, are smaller and lighter in size, switch on faster and are much more reliable and efficient for commercial use. LED bulbs or lights are indeed the best source of artificial lighting. It is glow that is not divine, neither spooky. Its simply, LED!
